66 Diner - A Narrative of Comfort Food

Please note this is NOT necessarily a review of the diner itself.  It is just something I feel compelled to write this morning while the writing bug has bitten me as per usual when I am supposed to be doing something else lol

Nestled just outside of the city limits on a winding two lane country road, sits a small building.  It's signage towering over the building and small parking lot, a beacon beckoning those that pass to stop.  The parking lot is small.  If you were to pass by it during non-peak hours you might not even notice it.   Lunch and supper time though, you will be hard pressed to find a parking spot.  What makes this place so popular you might ask?  It's comfort.  Comfort..... comfort in the the ambience, the personnel, the decorations, the attitude and southern drawl of the staff, and in the food itself.

When you walk in you are immediately in the middle of a busy scene of food coming out of the kitchen and wait staff walking past you.  Someone will inevitably "holler" in a welcoming voice "Sit whereever you like!" Shortly after someone will come and give you menus and take your drink order.  The front half of the restaurant are the old style dinner booths. The back half are tables to seat more people.  Both are equally cozy.  There are canvas paintings scattered throughout that one of the waitresses painted.  The wait staff are personable and very friendly and highly efficient.

The food is amazing.  They have a huge variety of food ranging from the classic burgers and fries to Greek dishes like chicken or pork souvlaki and everything else in between.  They run daily specials.  My favorite day to eat there is Thursday.  On Thursday they have chicken n dumplings which are not on the regular menu so it is the only day you can get them.  Their salt n pepper catfish is really good too.  My daughter's favorite part is that on their menu, banana pudding is considered a vegetable side lol.

This restaurant has been there for over a decade now.  Prior to it, I believe it was Don's BBQ, then Piedmont Diner, and then Don's BBQ again.  I can say that when it was those other things the parking lot was frequently empty.  But since 66 Diner moved in, that parking lot is bustling every day around lunch and dinner.  I suppose it is for breakfast too, I've never paid attention as I don't get breakfast there very often as I am not a morning person and/or do not have time to stop by on my way to work. The few times I have had breakfast from there, it was really good.
